From Magic 8 Balls to AI 🔮
By Jo
There was a time when life’s toughest questions were met with a shake of a Magic 8 Ball. “Ask again later” or “Outlook not so good” were simple, yet oddly satisfying, responses to our curiosities. Fast forward to today, and we’ve swapped the novelty of the 8 Ball for the sophistication of AI tools like ChatGPT, capable of providing thoughtful insights in seconds. Times have undoubtedly changed, and with those changes comes a valuable lesson: you can’t always apply old knowledge to new challenges.
The evolution from seeking quirky advice to cutting-edge technology highlights how far we’ve come. But it also reveals the complexity of modern life. Situations that were once solved with basic knowledge now often require adaptability, critical thinking, and a willingness to unlearn outdated approaches. The dynamics have shifted, and it’s up to us to shift with them.
Why Old Knowledge May Fall Short
In the past, solutions were often linear—cause and effect, straightforward processes, and fewer variables. Today, the landscape is more nuanced. Technology, global interconnectedness, and the sheer pace of innovation have created an environment where yesterday’s solutions may not address today’s problems.
Think about careers: skills that were marketable a decade ago may no longer be relevant. Or relationships: communication methods have evolved, requiring new ways of understanding and connecting with one another. The old knowledge isn’t useless, but it often needs to be adapted or expanded to remain applicable.
Adapting Without Losing Yourself
Change doesn’t mean you abandon who you are or what you know; it means enhancing your perspective. Here are some ways to thrive in ever-changing times:
Embrace Lifelong Learning: Stay curious and open to new information. Whether it’s a new app, a trend, or a philosophy, be willing to explore it.
Reassess Your Toolbox: What worked before might not work now. Be honest about when it’s time to upgrade your approach or let go of outdated habits.
Leverage Technology Wisely: AI and other advancements are tools, not replacements for human ingenuity. Use them to complement your knowledge, not replace your judgment.
Stay Rooted in Values: While methods and knowledge may change, your core values can serve as a steady guide in adapting to new circumstances.
Balance Simplicity with Complexity: Life today can be more complex, but sometimes the simplest mindset—being patient, asking questions, and staying true to yourself—can cut through the noise.
Evolving with Purpose
Whether times feel harder or easier depends on your outlook and your ability to adapt. The key is not to resist change but to flow with it, learning to use it to your advantage. Remember, the tools may have changed, but the goal remains the same: making life meaningful and fulfilling.
From the Magic 8 Ball to ChatGPT, we’ve grown in ways that would have seemed impossible decades ago. Yet, the lessons remain: ask questions, seek understanding, and know when to pivot. Times may change, but the quest for growth and happiness is timeless.
Raising Your Bare Minimum 🏋️
By Marcus
I’ve been seeing more charts like the one below (actually, I’ve seen some with upwards of a thousand applications 😫). The grind of dealing with rejection after rejection, no responses, and finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
This is a mentally and physically draining process. In this poor job market, I’ve seen people lose hope, fight depression, or just give up. The bills and responsibilities don’t stop, and the hits just keep coming. I’ve experienced this after three or four months of job hunting. It’s tough, and input from people who are detached from reality often have trouble understanding.
If you’ve lost the motivation to go on, let’s set a new bar for what the bare minimum is.
1. Give Max Effort 1x a Week
If you are feeling beat down, give yourself an opportunity to show up just one time a week. That’s one day a week where you table your problems long enough to perform at a high level. Apply, network, brainstorm, or create—whatever you feel will give you a shot at a better life.
You can spend the other six days in bed or on the couch, but for one day a week, agree to give max effort.
2. Protect Your Time, Value & Mindset
Remind yourself that you are valuable. Rejection can make you feel this is not true.
The time you spend to get to a state where you can be productive has great value. It may take you a few days to decompress or work up the mental energy to be productive. Try to avoid people, places, or entertainment that create a negative feedback loop.
3. Plant the Seeds
Give yourself something to look forward to in your field of interest. There are so many free webinars, workshops, and courses offered today.
Sign up, put it on your calendar as an appointment, and be present! You never know what hidden gems or opportunities might come to you because you chose to show up!
4. This is Dirty Work
You need a plan that works for you. If you only have it in you to do a few hours, do those few hours. Give yourself a chance to create a way out.
Remember, the point where others quit is where you’re just getting warmed up.
