Family Is What You Make It

Family is not just defined by blood, but by the love, trust, and support we give and receive. The traditional view of family may be what many of us grew up with which are parent(s), sibling(s), grandparent(s), and relatives who are connected by lineage. Listen… I grew up without grandparents and siblings, but as life unfolds, it becomes clear that family is much more about connection than it is about genetics.

Sometimes, the people who stand by you aren’t related to you by blood but by choice. These are the friends who show up when times are tough, the mentors who guide you, and the community members who celebrate your wins. They may not share your last name, but they hold a place in your life that is just as significant.

Think about it: how often do we find solace in the words of a friend or strength in the encouragement of a colleague? These moments remind us that family is built by shared experiences, mutual respect, and unconditional support

The Bonds You Strengthen

Even within traditional families, the bonds we have are only as strong as the effort we put into them. Just because someone is your sibling or parent doesn’t automatically mean they’ll understand you or support your journey. Building a strong family relationship takes patience, forgiveness, and communication.

On the flip side, not all blood relationships are healthy or sustainable. It’s okay to set boundaries with those who hurt you, even if they’re family by birth. Your mental and emotional well-being is paramount, and sometimes stepping back is necessary to protect yourself.

Defining Your Own Legacy

One of the most beautiful things about family is that you have the power to define it. You can create a loving household with your partner, build a close-knit group of friends who feel like siblings, or find family in a shared passion or purpose.

As you grow, your definition of family may evolve. What matters most is surrounding yourself with people who lift you up, challenge you to grow, and love you for who you are.

The Power of Choice

Ultimately, family is what you make it. It’s about choosing the people who matter most and showing up for them in the way they show up for you. It’s about understanding that love, not obligation, is the foundation of a meaningful family.

So, whether your family is large or small, traditional or unconventional, remember this: the people who support your dreams, help you through your struggles, and stand by your side are your true family. It’s not about where you come from; it’s about who you’re building with.

By Marcus

I gotta be honest. I’m a little ashamed and embarrassed to share this story, but it’s a great example of how your opinions can change as you grow.

When I was in college, I had a campus job like a lot of students. One day, one of my co-workers was crying, and I assumed there was some type of tragic news attached. Based on how emotional she was, I assumed it was a family member or friend who had passed away or something equally serious. At this point, I had worked with this person for a couple of years, and even on bad days, I’d never seen her react this way.

Of course, my other co-workers and I were concerned. When we approached her, she said her pet bird had passed away that morning. She was apologetic and ended up leaving work early that day to grieve.

At the time, my initial thought was, “Why is she crying over a bird?” I worked with one of my friends, and he was very understanding. I was taken back by how he really seemed to understand what she was experiencing. I didn’t get it, but I also never had any pets. I thought it was a strange reaction, but remember, I told you this is not one of my greatest moments.

A Lesson in Family

I think some people are too consumed with what a “traditional family” is. It’s a goal for some and not for others.

I’ve been fortunate enough to know and work with people who have support animals that are family. Or people who have pets or strong relationships with friends that make them family. Let’s not forget about people who are adopted into families.

I never had any pets until a couple of years ago, and through this experience, I was able to fully understand how people can become very attached to animals. There’s nothing wrong with it. Humans are capable of forming strong bonds with beings that are non-human.

More Than Family

The relationships you value are important. Don’t let society or ignorance keep you from being happy with the “family” you have. I hope sharing my story of ignorance is helpful as you establish whatever family you want.

Most importantly, you define what family means to you. No one else.

If we’ve learned nothing from the Fast & Furious movies, it’s that family runs deeper than bloodlines and gene pools.
