Pitfalls of Measuring Contributions 📏

By Jo

In our pursuit of success, we often resort to measuring Contributions, be as it may…. for relationships, work, or personal achievements. However, this silly idea on quantifying our value can lead to some buffoonery that you may regret.

When we reduce contributions to numbers or scores, we overlook the intangible qualities that drive progress. For an example, Creativity, collaboration, and resilience challenge the concept of “Keeping Score“ yet are vital for making a significant impact in all situations.

More or less, measuring contributions breeds competition and comparison, inhibiting an environment where individuals collaborate for collective growth rather than strive for validation. This obsession with keeping score can also lead to resentment and disengagement, as individuals feel reduced to mere numbers.

Instead of focusing on sheer numbers, we should focus on cultivating environments that foster diversity and collaboration. By shifting our focus from numbers to nurturing, we can create space for innovation and genuine contributions that supersede traditional metrics.

In conclusion, the true value of our contributions lies not in numbers but in the impact we make on others in the world. It's about the connections we forge in the positive change we inspire. Let's break free from the confines of measuring all things when it comes to humanity and embrace the limitless potential of our collective contributions.

Take The Stairs 🚶

By Marcus

Difficult challenges take time. During that time, you deal with stress, depression, fatigue, discouragement and failure to name a few.

Several years ago, a mentor of mine recommended I read, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. This is where I first introduced to the concept of “begin with the end in mind” This is a great concept and I adopted this philosophy, however I was unprepared for what happens between the beginning and the end.

How do you proceed when you have a clear finish line, a great start, but the road in-between appears to never end?

STUCK IN THE MIDDLE

Giving it your best day after day with no clear result can be a drain. In time if the wins aren't big enough and progress doesn't seem substantial, your drive to continue may diminish. It can feel like you are being punished for having goals to begin with.

This is where the feeling of being "stuck in limbo" appears. When this happens, there are a few questions I recommend asking yourself:

  1. How much progress from the starting line have I made?

  2. Do I need to modify my goals or make adjustments to hit my target faster?

  3. What is the next significant milestone that would make me feel like I'm progressing?

BECOME A MILESTONE HUNTER

Our biggest goals need milestones. Creating milestones and working toward them creates a system that rewards your efforts. Take your biggest goal and break it down into three to five stages (or more). Remember, you are building a system for YOU, so it only has to work for YOU!

If you feel like you are giving it your best, but the feeling of diminishing returns is setting in, try this: revisit your primary objective and break it down into smaller pieces.
